Costa Careyes

My motto since taking up the sport of polo:  Have polo mallet, will travel.  Over Easter, my children and I took our mallets and swim suits and headed South to Costa Careyes, Mexico, a private resort located on the Pacific Ocean in the southern part of Jalisco, Mexico.  Careyes is comprised of private villas and casitas all with sweeping views of the beautiful, blue Pacific.  In addition to the amazing warm surf, boating and snorkeling activities offered, Careyes has two plush, green polo fields and strings of Argentine polo ponies.

Our visit over Easter week was to play and sponsor the 17th annual Agua Alta Polo Tournament.  This 6-8 goal tournament was comprised of six teams with players from Mexico, Columbia, Argentina, the United States and Italy.  We competed in six games throughout the week with the children playing in their own international polo matches in the mornings.  The tournament games were competitive, fast and furious with a few player injuries, (I had a ball to the back that left me streaming tears for a minute).  But the laid back, relaxed spirit and convivial community-like nature of Careyes somehow lets you leave your competitive edge on the field as you immediately plan the next social gathering on the beach or house party with your recent opponent.

On the beautiful beaches, we enjoyed horseback riding, paddle boarding, snorkeling and boating as well as dining and a little Mescal sipping.  Heaven.  This resort is a must for those loving an international vibe coupled with smaller crowds.  As there is currently no hotel and all housing is in private villas and casitas, you have the option to relax with privacy, or join other resort guests at the beach restaurant in Playa Rosa or the Plaza de Caballeros.   With the ebb and flow of Spanish and English on and off of the field, it took this trip for my children to really want to schedule Duolingo time to learn Spanish to speak with their new friends from Mexico and Columbia.
And, as for polo, whether for your bucket list to try your hand at the sport as a beginner or to compete in an international tournament, their staff and stock are awaiting your visit!
